Abstract: The objectives of this study were to explore the concept of the 'health-promoting school' in a specific New Zealand context; to develop and use appropriate research methods to assess a single low decile school in relation to World Health Organization health-promoting school components and checkpoints; to work with the school community to identify health issues; and, to record external and internal changes that could impact on school health over a finite time period. Case study was selected as the most appropriate method to collect both quantitative and qualitative evidence with the aim of providing a clear understanding of the particular case. Results confirmed that the school was working appropriately within the scope of their educational practice to provide a health-promoting school environment for the school community. Gaps and issues identified included an element of talking past each other between the cultures of the education organisation and the nominated health service provider respectively that contributed to a lack of appropriate and accessible health service delivery for the school population. Teaching staff considered that they had insufficient access to health knowledge, and input from health service staff did not meet health education requirements for the school. Staff preference for increased school nurse involvement was not realised. The consequence was that two outside agencies (KiwiCan and Life Education Trust) delivered the bulk of the Health and Physical Education curriculum which resulted in a degree of fragmentation of health education for students. The issues that were identified demonstrated that health services in the area were not satisfactorily meeting the needs of the community and were not addressing the health inequities for the predominantly Pacific Island and Maori students and of their families that formed the school community. The researcher concluded that a full-service school approach should be considered by the school and the local district health board as one way to overcome the current lack of access to health services for the school community. Assertions included the potential integration of locally available services by a school-based nurse coordinator supported by health professionals (nurse practitioner and Pacific Island Community Health Worker) and social workers. The vision included professionals working within their professional scopes of practice as part of a Primary Health Organisation with the aim of appropriately addressing the health inequities experienced by the school population.

Abstract: This thesis explores the shared experiential journeys of four Pukorero (participants) who successfully completed detoxification and recovery programmes from AOD addiction. Three questions were used to guide the research process to enable the Pukorero to identify positive aspects of their individual detoxification and recovery programmes, surface any barriers and issues they experienced, and clarify the support they received throughout the process. Kaupapa Maori and narrative inquiry was adapted to undertake this study to capture the essence of Maori thinking and reality regarding AOD. Through the use of thematic analysis the data findings of the study reflect the views from each Pukorero of Wairua, Whakapapa and Whanau as key to their successful recovery. This supports the notion that a pathway of detoxification, recovery and hope exists to enable Maori and others to take the journey to reclaim their own health and well-being, and the health and well-being of whanau, hapu, iwi, and Maori community. In honour of these Pukorero, kaumatua, tipuna, whanau, hapu, iwi, Maori katoa, and to celebrate kaupapa Maori and narrative inquiry [as the preferred methodological approach], the use of our tino ataahua reo integrated with English throughout the thesis demonstrates the interwoven connections between the two cultures enshrined in Te Tiriti o Waitangi that comprise the nation of Aotearoa me Te Waipounamu of New Zealand.

This paper is a report of a study seeking to understand the experience of New Zealand rural dwelling Mäori clients with end-stage renal disease who receive haemodialysis. End stage renal disease (ESRD) is related to lifestyle, genetic factors and environment, and Mäori are at higher risk of renal disease which results of need for renal replacement therapy to sustain their lives. Dialysis clients are a group of ?silent? clients under the care of the dominant health professionals. Adherence with therapeutic regimes has been a main issue for health care professionals and service delivery, as it directly contributes to the efficacy of the treatment and cost effectiveness. Mäori clients? experience of living with haemodialysis has not been explored. Although there are a number of studies describing the experience of patients living on dialysis so far, no studies have yet focused specifically on the experience of Mäori clients towards their renal replacement therapy. The continual demands of dialysis treatment are significant and given the high proportion of Mäori having dialysis. It is timely to explore the experience of Mäori clients and their family/whänau in order to understand the need for quality of care and to promote Mäori health outcomes in chronic kidney disease management

Abstract: Undertakes a qualitative, phenomenological study to explore the experiences of practitioners delivering asthma services to tamariki Maori and their whanau in primary healthcare. Employs a kaupapa Maori methodology in order to provide a Maori perspective to the research. Uses an equity framework in the analysis and interpretation of the results, to ensure alignment with Maori values and aspirations. Interviews 15 doctors and nurses from Maori, mainstream and Very-Low-Cost-Access providers of asthma services. Presents the results using the Pou Ora framework with four main themes: Hauora, Toi Ora, Whanau Ora, and Mauri Ora.

Abstract: Collates and analyses evaluations of Central Region Kia Ora Hauora programmes from 2010-2017 to discovers what interventions in the programme were most effective for increasing the recruitment of Maori into health careers. Identifies Work-choice Day and Work Experience Day as the most effective interventions, and that meeting health professionals and taking part in simulated practice experiences were influential.

Abstract: Explores, through kaupapa Māori (Māori ideology) research principles, the fundamental concepts guiding ten Māori nurses working in end-of-life care settings. Identifies the concepts of whanaungatanga (establishing connections), manaakitanga (generosity and care for others), and kaitiakitanga (guardianship) as central to the practice of these Māori nurses along with the ethical principles of tika (the right way), pono (honesty) and aroha (generosity of spirit). Describes how these concepts and principles shape how these Māori nurses cared for their Māori patients and whānau, and for themselves. Stresses the need for the health system to better understand the Maori world view on death and dying.

Abstract: Investigates factors supporting Maori student engagement, retention and success in nursing education. Explores the experiences, perceptions and insights of Maori nursing students enrolled in Te Ohanga Mataora: Bachelor of Health Sciences Maori Nursing at Te Whare Wananga O Awanuiarangi. Conducts semi-structured face-to-face interviews with 12 full-time Maori undergraduate nursing students, highlighting both positive and negative factors in academic engagement.
