Abstract: This study aims to identify work related factors contributing to New Zealand nurses' intent to leave the job. Two hundred and seventy five surveys (response rate = 68.8%) from a random sample of 400 nurses employed in one district health board were used to explore intent to leave the job. Three research questions directed the description of levels of job satisfaction, job stress, and burnout found in nurse participants, correlations between the three variables, and the identification of variables predicting intent to leave the job through regression analyses. The survey found levels of job satisfaction were high, job stress was low, and burnout was average. Specifically, lack of opportunity to participate in organisational decision making, control over work conditions, control over what goes on in the work setting (key Magnet Hospital characteristics) were not evident, and with pay rates, were the main sources of job dissatisfaction. Workload was the most frequently experienced source of stress by nurse participants. Twenty-five per cent of nurse participants reported high levels of intent to leave the job. Correlations suggested that reductions in job satisfaction influenced increases in job stress and burnout. Job stress was associated with increases in emotional exhaustion. Emotional exhaustion was influenced by eight job satisfaction, job stress, and burnout subscales. Five subscales (professional opportunities, praise and recognition, interaction opportunities, extrinsic rewards, lack of support) explained 26.2% of the variance in nurse participant's intent to leave. The author concludes that issues of power and control were associated with job dissatisfaction, job stress and burnout in nursing practice. However, predictors of intent to leave the job suggest a growing realisation by nurse participants that postgraduate education and nursing research may provide the tools to create positive change in the health care environment and make nursing visible, valued and appropriately rewarded.

Abstract: The focus for this research was nursing culture satisfaction and intent to remain working within a secondary hospital in the New Zealand public healthcare system. A specific group of 117 registered and enrolled nurses were surveyed to identify what issues would encourage them to remain working within the organisation. Descriptive data derived from the Nursing Culture Satisfaction Questionnaire found higher levels of job satisfaction and intention to stay from the staff in operating theatre, compared to other surveyed areas. Factors reported as contributing to job satisfaction included supportive, friendly staff, teamwork, and organisation size. Important issues regarding recruitment and retention include pay parity, personal satisfaction, conditions of employment, the valuing of staff and poor nurse patient ratios. Findings suggest that hospital management should foster positive work environments and respect, to promote job satisfaction and discourage nurses leaving the organisation. While pay parity was a large issue at the time of the questionnaire, the inclusion of the district health board in the nurse Multi Employer Collective Agreement may have reduced this as a contributing factor.

The report describes the findings for job dissatisfaction, burnout and the intent to leave, the work climate in hospitals, workforce management, the structure of nurses' work, and quality of care. The authors discuss these findings and their implications for nursing in New Zealand.

Abstract: A qualitative descriptive approach was undertaken to explore the experience of eight registered nurses and two hospital play specialists who care for children hospitalised with burn injuries. The research participants were recruited from a paediatric ward that offers centralised specialty care to children with burns. Emerging out of the data was the over-arching theme of 'passionate dedication' that shows the nurses and hospital play specialists genuine compassion and commitment to meet the needs of the children with burns. The findings of the study reveal that the participant's dedication is shaped and determined by a dynamic process that involves having professional integrity and in-depth knowledge of caring for children and burn management. The nurses and the hospital play specialists have a common understanding of what their role entails and the skills required to provide quality care and support to the children and the children's family. On a personal and professional level the participants encounter several challenges in this care context that are physically and emotionally overwhelming. Despite becoming overwhelmed the participants are revealed as being resourceful and resilient in their aptitude to find ways that enable them to cope and get through. The author suggests that this study supports international literature that suggests that caring for children with burns is equally rewarding, as much as it is physically and emotionally demanding. The author identifies that the implication in this study for the organisation is to seriously consider issues regarding productivity and efficiency of the workforce with acknowledgement that nurses and hospital play specialists cannot do this emotional work without effective systems of support in place.

Abstract: Develops a daily measure of job satisfaction in the operating room (OR) setting in the form of a tool called the Morale-o-Meter. Trials and evaluates the tool between 2018-2019, inviting all OR staff to participate using the tool to measure their job satisfaction once each shift. Follows up the trial with an online feedback survey. Proves that overall job satisfaction is positively related to daily job satisfaction and affective commitment, and negatively related to emotional exhaustion. Suggests the Morale-o-Meter has the potential to increase the voice of OR nurses.

Abstract: In this paper the authors draw attention to the value and understandings of nurse dignity in the work-life of nurses. A review of nursing literature and a theoretical lens on worker dignity derived from recent work by Hodson (2001) was used to explore these questions. In the context of current and international workforce issues associated with recruitment and retention, analysis of the construct of worker dignity within the profession takes on a strong imperative. Findings of this inquiry reveal that while there is a degree of coherence between the nursing research and elements of Hodson's (2001) research on worker dignity, the dignity of nurses, as a specific construct and as an intrinsic human and worker right has received little explicit attention. Reasons for this may lie partly in approaches that privilege patient dignity over nurse dignity and which rely on the altruism and self-sacrifice of nurses to sustain patient care in environments dominated by cost-control agendas. The value of dignity in the work-life of nurses has been under-explored and there is a critical need for further theoretical work and research. This agenda goes beyond acceptance of dignity in the workplace as a human right towards the recognition that worker dignity may be a critical factor in sustaining development of healthy workplaces and healthy workforces. Directing explicit attention to nurse dignity may benefit the attainment of both nurse and organisational goals. Hodson's (2001) framework offers a new perspective on dignity in the workplace.

Abstract: The author investigates why nurses in New Zealand stay working in rural areas when their Australian counterparts and medical colleagues are leaving rural areas at alarming rates. She looks at international recruitment and retention issues, and particularly compares rural nursing in Australia with New Zealand. Local research shows that over 50% of rural nursing is in the practice environment. Practice nurses report high job satisfaction, specifically around working with diverse populations, autonomy, and working with GPs, the local community, and local iwi. The only perceived barrier identified in the New Zealand literature to job satisfaction and collaborative team behaviour has been the funding of nursing services in rural areas. This contrasts with many barriers to rural nursing in Australia, and the author suggests New Zealand policy makers may learn from Australia's retention issues.
