Abstract |
The aim of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore the experience of new comprehensive nursing graduates as they adapted to working in the acute psychiatric setting. Interviews were conducted with four participants, focussing on their current work experiences and how the philosophical beliefs and values derived from their educational preparation fit with those they encountered within the practice setting. The data were analysed by noting common experiences, values and meanings and identifying the themes as they emerged. The themes were: transition to practice, conflict, contradiction, structural constraints, and the reality of the psychiatric setting. The results of the study confirm the concern that has been voiced by new graduates about the quality and quantity of current orientation programmes. Conflicting values and beliefs concerning the nature of mental health/psychiatric nursing has also become evident. It appears that the graduates' Comprehensive nursing preparation may have contributed to their feelings of unease as they attempted to fit their own values and beliefs about nursing with those of the acute psychiatric setting |

Abstract |
Recent Nursing Council of New Zealand guidelines for competence-based practising certificates and the fact that all nurse educators must have a current practising certificate prompted the Nursing Schools within the Tertiary Accord of New Zealand (TANZ) to explore issues surrounding current competency in practice and how this can be maintained by nurse educators. The authors note that discussions related to competence-based practising certificates generally refer to competence only in terms of direct patient care. They set out to clarify the issue with specific reference to nurse educators who, by the nature of their scope of practice, often do not carry a patient caseload. They review the literature relating to currency of practice and draw on the findings of a survey of TANZ Nursing Schools and provide a position on how currency of practice applies to nurses working in an educational setting. They present strategies to maintain clinical, teaching and scholarly currency and make some suggestions for providing evidence that currency of practice is maintained. |

Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to evaluate how the New Zealand style of problem based learning was developing students' understanding and integration of knowledge. The 'pure' problem based learning process has been adapted to move students gradually from teacher direction to taking responsibility for their learning. Two cycles of an action research method were used, involving 4 lecturers and 17 students. Data was collected both quantitatively and qualitatively over a 16-week period. Findings indicated the importance of: explaining the purpose and process of problem based learning; communicating in detail the role of both students and lecturers; keeping communication lines open; addressing timetabling issues and valuing this method of learning for nursing practice. Implications for nursing education are addressed. |

Abstract |
This article discusses the disconnection between mental health nurses and policy, and the importance of reconnecting such relationships. It is suggested this will benefit consumers, provide influence in health care policies and, ultimately, contribute to strategies to improve the health of our nation. In this article, the author draws on her own experiences and applies these to a discussion of how mental health nurses can influence and strengthen their relationships with nursing policy. |

Abstract |
This article presents a literature review of current research on perioperative nursing. Research studies are summarised. Overall findings include that there is a lack of exposure to perioperative nursing in undergraduate level, that expert nurses in the operating theatre make a positive economic and social contribution to patient outcomes, and there are barriers to registered nurses expanding their role in operating theatres. |

Abstract |
This article provides a background to the development of cognitive therapy and cognitive therapeutic skills with a specific focus on the treatment of a depressive episode. It discusses the utility of cognitive therapeutic strategies to the model of crisis theory and initial crisis assessment currently used by the Community Assessment & Treatment Team of Waitemata District Health Board. A brief background to cognitive therapy is provided, followed by a comprehensive example of the use of the Socratic questioning method in guiding collaborative assessment and treatment of suicidality by nurses during the initial crisis assessment. |

Abstract |
Reveals that recent longitudinal evaluation of 21 Nursing Entry to Practice (NETP) programmes in NZ identified that preceptorship selection, education and support are not properly resourced. Identifies the factors preventing preceptors from receiving appropriate training and recommends development of a clearly-defined preceptor selection and education process. |

Abstract |
Aims to generate a descriptive account of the experiences of district nurses working with people with spinal cord injury (SCI). Conducts a qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured interviews with three district nurses about their role. Reveals three themes related to the district nurses' role: tasks; complexity; barriers/enablers affecting performance. Suggests that the role of district health nurses meeting the needs of people with SCI requires review. |

Abstract |
Highlights the value of academic staff having clinical currency that allows them to meet moral and professional responsibilities to return to work during a pandemic. Makes clear that a collaborative relationship between education and healthcare providers allows access to frontline-prepared, highly-skilled registered nurses to be called upon in a time of need. Argues that academic and clinical roles should not be mutually exclusive. |
