  Abstract Aims to identify whether female smokers referred to the colposcopy department at a city hospital required more follow-up visits, treatments and re-referrals than did non-smokers. Performs a retrospective descriptive study observing 494 new patients over 6 years. Identifies the percentage of Maori women attending the clinic who were smokers and their likelihood of non-attendance. Emphasises the need for smoke-free education for women that highlights the link between smoking and cervical cancer.

Analyses the results descriptively, finding a statistically significant relationship between being a specialist and the intention to prescribe. Avers that for diabetes nurse specialist prescribing to continue, the resources for supervision must be taken into account in workforce planning.

  Abstract Presents the results of a stop-smoking trial using a financial incentive to assist Maori nursing students and a whanau quit-mate to quit smoking. Conducts a marae-based 24-week programme of cessation support with financial incentives in the form of scholarship payments awarded to students incrementally based on proven smoking cessation of both quit mates. Uses focus groups at two points in the programme with students and their quit mates and administers a questionnaire to students at the end of the programme.
