Abstract: This contemporary historical study examines the health sector environment of the 1990s and the turn of the 21st century, and assesses the policy initiatives undertaken to advance nursing in New Zealand during that period. The authors look at the conditions and forces that saw nursing achieve a new emphasis on advanced and expanded scope of nursing practice, less than a decade after the commencement of New Zealand's first pre-registration nursing degrees.

Abstract: Reports on the effect of a 'nurse-led' glaucoma clinic at a large metropolitan hospital, in which patients were recruited from specific categories of glaucoma patients on the waiting list. Audits the impact on the waiting list over a two-year period.

Abstract: Investigated final-year nursing students' perception of the effectiveness of a ward-based simulation learning activity using actor patients. Conducts focus group interviews after the simulation and three months later after clinical placement. Identifies three themes: decreasing the theory-practice gap; decision-making; nursing behaviour.

Abstract: The study was commissioned to define the role of Advanced Nurses Practitioner to inform the establishment of a clinical career pathway. Four new, loosely defined ANP positions were created and the role evolution over three months was described. The impact on the multidisciplinary team functioning was to be given particular attention. The research design was developed in collaboration with the ANP Project Team of the service. Data were derived from surveys of nurses in the units and other staff before and at the end of the 3 months period; interviews with the ANPs and official client advocates; daily journals and weekly logs kept by the ANPs; statistical records of patient loads and staffing. The findings presented the role as the interface of unit management and direct client care, with the ANPs orchestrating the activities of the unit. The ANPs developed the role differently according to quite distinct conceptualisations of nursing which influenced whether direct client care was pivotal or peripheral to the role. This had an effect on whether the strains of the service were seen as inhibitory of focal to the development of the ANP practice. There was little change in unit staff satisfaction. Attempts to incorporate client advocacy to determine change in client satisfaction were unsuccessful. The ANPs used the research as a process of role development

Abstract: A paper presenting the findings of a small research project involving a group of self-selected senior nurses of Wellington Hospital to explore the nature of nursing practice in the care and management of hospitalised patients and to formalise the language that would acknowledge its significance in the current effort of hospitals to define patient care pathways. The nature of hospital nursing practice was described in themes of a generic process of nurse-patient care that articulates a distinct specialism of hospital nursing, whatever the hospital department in which nurses hold positions.

Abstract: Examines the lived experiences of adults with myasthenia gravis(MG). Uses an interpretive phenomenological approach applying the research methodology of van Manen (1990). Interviews seven people living with MG and records their experiences of the disease. Poses broadly-worded questions about various topics related to MG, that include diagnosis, symptoms, treatments and coping strategies, guided by individual experiences. Reveals by means of thematic analysis that MG affects every aspect of a person?s ?lifeworld?: their sense of time, body, and space and their relationships with others. Highlights three main themes embedded in the data experienced by a person with MG: living with uncertainty, living with weakness and living with change.

Abstract: Employs the life-world hermeneutic phenomenology of Van Manen to examine perspectives on person-centred care in residential homes in both NZ and Singapore. Conducts interviews with 30 residents, 10 family members and 10 caregivers at 2 residential facilities. Records the interviews and analyses data using Van Manen's 6-step research process.
