Highlights the association between poor performance of NTS with adverse patient events. Conducts the study in four surgical wards in a metropolitan hospital, using observation and semi-structured interviews with RNs.

Utilises a qualitative approach with the epistemological and methodological basis informed by interpretative phenomenological analysis. Identifies the concepts of whanaungatanga (establishing connections), manaakitanga (generosity and care for others), and kaitiakitanga (guardianship) as central to the practice of these Māori nurses along with the ethical principles of tika (the right way), pono (honesty) and aroha (generosity of spirit). Describes how these concepts and principles shape how these Māori nurses cared for their Māori patients and whānau, and for themselves. Stresses the need for the health system to better understand the Maori world view on death and dying.

Uses a collaborative auto-ethnographic approach to reflect on the authors' experiences of emotional labour in supporting nursing students throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and the invisibility of the work within academia. Notes that the patriarchal construction of academia remains present and highly visible to the detriment of many female career trajectories.
