Abstract: Performs an explanatory sequential mixed-methods study comprising a questionnaire followed by interviews, to understand the experiences and preparedness of nurse educators in working with Maori nursing students. Demonstrates that throughout NZ, nursing schools and the educational institutes in which they are situated are informed by a range of strategies aimed at supporting Maori learners. Finds from interviews that environments encompassing te ao Maori (the Maori world) and staff practises that aligned with this were enabling for Maori nursing students.

Abstract: Investigates factors supporting Maori student engagement, retention and success in nursing education. Explores the experiences, perceptions and insights of Maori nursing students enrolled in Te Ohanga Mataora: Bachelor of Health Sciences Maori Nursing at Te Whare Wananga O Awanuiarangi. Conducts semi-structured face-to-face interviews with 12 full-time Maori undergraduate nursing students, highlighting both positive and negative factors in academic engagement.

Abstract: The New Zealand emergency department (ED) nurse is faced daily with the challenge of caring for patients of all ages with a wide variety of presenting complaints. Courses are available for ED specialty work such as trauma and paediatric assessment. However, this thesis argues, it is difficult to access updated and ongoing education in relation to caring for people with mental health problems who present to the emergency department. In addition to this education deficit, are the challenges of providing care in an overcrowded ED environment. The author goes on to say that such factors contribute to a perceived lack of confidence and sometimes ambivalence or frustration on the part of nursing staff in caring for this group. This may result in an inconsistent standard of care for the person with a mental health problem unless such issues are addressed. The aim of this research paper was to explore the education needs of ED nurses when caring for people with mental health problems. A literature review was undertaken to investigate the broad education strategies available to overcome these challenges. Diverse approaches were identified such as workshops, clinical guidelines, and mental health consultation-liaison roles. Research was also identified that examined ED nursing attitudes and their learning needs in relation to mental health. This paper concludes with a discussion of recommendations for the New Zealand setting with the intention of developing a more confident and competent nursing workforce, who are better prepared to care for the person with a mental health problem.

Abstract: Aims to contribute to an understanding of the work of nurse educators by illustrating the effect that changing health care and nursing workforce demands have had on the nurse educator role. Employs both academic and narrative writing in order to traverse the complexity of being a nurse educator. Argues that the educator needs to position the role between education and nursing practice, fulfilling the role of Kaiako Tapuhi.

Abstract: The researchers present a survey of a sample population of 32 advanced practice nurses (APN) in the US about their experiences of acquiring and implementing prescriptive authority. The issues relevant to nurse practitioners in New Zealand are discussed, around acquiring knowledge and education, relationships with other professionals, establishing the role, and retaining the nursing role. The intent and scope of APN prescribing in the US is also discussed.

Abstract: Aims to understand the experiences of postgraduate nurses learning to become nurse practitioner prescribers when undertaking courses that employed a constructivist pedagogical approach. Uses narrative inquiry to explore the perceptions, views and experiences of 10 prospective nurse prescribers, and thematic analysis to identify two main themes of their experiences.

Abstract: This qualitative research project explored the experiences of nurse educators who sought to assess aspects, which could be related to facilitation of emotional competence, in nursing students. Focus groups were conducted in three different educational institutions, offering a Bachelor of nursing degree. Each of the participants had a teaching and assessment role within the school of nursing. The contributions of the nurse educators and their interactions were audio taped, transcribed and then later, analysed using thematic and focus group analysis practices. From the analysis of the experiences of the nurse educators, four predominant themes arose which capture the areas of importance to the participants. Student nurses can develop emotional competence by critically reflecting during classroom and clinical experiences. Continuous consideration must be made within each practicing area of nursing, of the environmental and relational challenges which inhibit or facilitate nurse's ability to practice with emotional competence. Educators and practicing nurses, who work alongside students, must uphold the expectation that emotional competence is a requisite ability and provide opportunities to foster emotional growth and skills to resolve conflict within the culture of nursing. A common view shared by the educators was that the profession of nursing needs to have a clear understanding of what constitutes emotional competence. Strategies to realistically incorporate emotional competence into the educational curriculum and competency based assessment opportunities within nursing education are required. Suggestions are presented from which undergraduate nursing education can facilitate development of emotional competence with those students working toward becoming a registered nurse. Emotional competence is suggested as an essential learning outcome in the movement toward transformative nursing education and a collaborative nursing profession.
